The History of the WNBA
The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a professional basketball league in the United States. It is currently composed of twelve teams. The league began play in 1997 as the women’s counterpart to the National Basketball Association (NBA).
Since its inception, the league has seen increased interest and attendance, with nine of its teams averaging over 8,000 fans per game during the 2015 season. In terms of revenue, the WNBA is reported to lose around $10 million annually. Despite this, it has been praised for its social impact; specifically, its success in promoting gender equality and helping to break down racial barriers in sport.
One of the most popular aspects of the WNBA is its players’ dunking abilities. Fans love to see these powerful athletes slam the ball through the hoop with authority. As of July 2017, there have been a total of 94 dunks in WNBA history. Brittney Griner of the Phoenix Mercury holds the record for most career dunks with 23.
The Rules of the WNBA
In order to be classified as a dunk in the WNBA, both of the player’s feet must be completely above the rim and the ball must go through the net. Here are some examples of plays that would not be considered a dunk:
-A player goes up for a layup and is fouled before the ball goes through the rim.
-A player misses a layup attempt and the ball bounces off the rim.
-A player tries for a put-back dunk after a teammate misses a shot, but does not make it through the net.
So far, there have been 22 dunks in WNBA history. The first ever WNBA dunk was by Lisa Leslie of the Los Angeles Sparks on July 30, 2002. Candace Parker of the Los Angeles Sparks currently holds the record for most dunks in a season with six (set in 2008). Parker is also tied with Tina Thompson of the Houston Comets for most career dunks with eight.
