May 11th is a day that will live in infamy. On this date in history, many important events have occurred. In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte became the Emperor of France after defeating the Austrian army at the Battle of Austerlitz. This event would go on to shape European history for years to come. In 1941, Japan attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, drawing America into World War II. And in 2002, the world was shocked by the terrorist attacks on New York City and Washington D.C., which claimed the lives of nearly 3,000 people.
May 11th is also significant for less tragic reasons. It is National Twilight Zone Day, commemorating Rod Serling’s classic TV show which first aired on this day in 1959. And in 2010, on May 11th-13th, one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the last century occurred on Iceland’s Eyjafjallajufffdkull volcano. The ash cloud from this eruption caused widespread travel disruptions across Europe as flights were cancelled due to fears of engine damage.

Today is May 11th, and unfortunately, it’s a day that will be remembered for a number of accidents. Here are some of the most notable:
-In 2011, an EF5 tornado struck Joplin, Missouri, resulting in 158 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries. It was the deadliest tornado in the United States since 1947.
-In 2013, a Bangladesh garment factory collapsed, killing 1,134 people and injuring 2,500 others.
-In 2014, a South Korean ferry capsized and sank, killing 304 people (mostly high school students) and leaving 9 missing.
-Also in 2014, an Malaysia Airlines plane carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew members disappeared en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The plane has never been found despite an extensive search effort.
-In 2015, a Germanwings Airbus A320 crashed into the French Alps while on its way from Barcelona to Dusseldorf, Germany, killing all 150 people on board.
